Apple

9:58am on the 25th of September, 2008

I wanted to make some different types of apple for the team for some seasonal play foods this fall. I found a knitting pattern for an apple as well as a few crochet. I tried the knit apple, but found errors in the pattern and didn’t like the shape and I didn’t like any of the other patterns I found (not realistic enough), so I did what I do best and improvised my own apple pattern!

Apple
This pattern is suitable for beginners as it is quite easy. As with all my Amigurumi crochet patterns, the rounds are worked in spirals- no chaining or adding new row stitches is necessary at all. If you wish, you can use a safety pin or stitch marker to keep track of your new rounds.

You’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn (cotton, acrylic, wool is my personal preference) in apple color (golden yellow, spring green, red) and small amount of brown yarn for stem
Hook size G
Stuffing (wool roving or polyfill)
Darning or tapestry needle

Apple-
With your apple colored yarn, make a magic ring with 6 stitches.
Round 1: 2sc in each st around- 12 st
Round 2: 1 sc, 2 sc increase around- 18 st
Round 3: sc around- 18 st
Round 4: 2sc, 2 sc increase around- 24 st
Rounds 5-6: sc around- 24 st
Round 7: 3sc, 2 sc increase around- 30 st
Rounds 8-10: sc around- 30 st
Round 11: 4sc, 2 sc increase around- 36 st
Rounds 12-15: sc around- 36 st
Round 16: 5sc, 2 sc increase around- 42 st
Round 17: sc around- 42 st
Round 18: 5sc, decrease in the next stitch around- 36 st
Round 19: 4sc, decrease in the next stitch around- 30 st
Round 20: 3sc, decrease in the next stitch around- 24 st

At this point you want to thread your magic loop yarn end on a needle and bring through to the bottom of the apple right through the ring center. Stuff firmly.

Round 21: 2sc, decrease in the next stitch around- 18 st
Round 22: 1sc, decrease in the next stitch around- 12 st
Round 23: sc around- 12 st
Round 24: Decrease every 2 st- 6 st

Weave finishing end through the last 6 stitches TWICE and pull closed. With your needle, bring magic ring yarn end up through the top, pull to create a “pucker” in the apple, then tie both yarn ends together making sure to knot them firmly together. Weave in your yarn ends.

To make a stem simply make a 3 stitch i-cord out of brown yarn.

Enjoy your apple!

  1. That is adorable. Are you planning on making a bushel of apples in different colors? That would be very pretty!

  2. Thanks Amber! Yea, I’m thinking of making some more in different colors soon.

  3. A few questions:
    - Can you describe the magic ring yarn tail process more detailed? I’m lost.
    - Why go through the 6 sts TWICE at the end?
    - In the bottom pic, is that a hole or brown yarn?

TY for a great aapple pattern!

  4. Hi Chastity, I emailed you with some answers, but I will also post them here in case you didn’t get the email.

    To answer your questions:
    - You can see a tutorial on how to do a magic ring here.

    - Going through these stitches twice assures that the yarn end will not work loose from play in the future. Kind of an added safety measure.

    - The brown on the bottom is a yarn end from the i-cord stem, I simply made a few stitches with it to secure it all the more and add some more realistic detail.

I hope this helps, please don’t hesitate to email me with any further questions you may have.

  5. Such a cute apple.
