Solar Decathlon
10:14am on the 10th of October, 2007
I’ve blogged before about BP doing good things for our environment with looking for green energy sources. Well, now they have partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy to sponsor the BP Solar Decathlon, which is where teams of people compete to form a solar village in the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this October from the eleventh until the nineteenth. BP, as one of the main corporate sponsors, has chosen to sponsor this event as part of their “commitment to discovering cost effective, clean energy solutions for everyday living.” BP has often impressed me with their devotion to our environment as well as their help with finding longterm solutions for different sources of energy besides fossil fuels.
Twenty teams (consisting of students from colleges & universities around the globe) have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to compete in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. The teams will compete in a total of ten contests to select the winner. By solely using solar power, these teams must generate enough electricity to run a modern household. The students must carefully choose power systems, products & appliances for their buildings. This will be the third year that the Solar Decathlon has been held. The previous competitions have greatly increased awareness of solar energy’s potential as well as advancing the science & technology of solar energy. In both the 2002 & 2005 Solar Decathlons, the winners have been students from the University of Colorado! Quite an accomplishment, wouldn’t you say?
I think it would be fun to participate! If you are student & you would you do too, then drop on by the website for details!
