The 5 best diaper woolen yarns

4:12pm on the 21st of June, 2007

IBK, MM, ZS I guess you could say I’ve been making a series of articles on cloth diapering. My first was an intro to using cloth, it’s benefits to our children & the planet. Next was The 9 best fitted cloth diapers, which talked of my favorite nine brands of fitted diapers. I also have a post on knitting frugally. Now I’d like to talk about what goes over those fitteds- wool! This article’s focus is on my five favorite brands & types of yarn for making hand knit cloth diapering woolens; soaker, shorties, & longies.

    Here we go!

  1. Irish Baby Knits: I’ve used the Lindon, Peregrine, & Galenas merinos with excellent results. Lindon is optimum for soakers & overnight woolies. The Lindon & Peregrine hold their shape extremely well & don’t pill easily. The Galenas is perfect for newborns since it’s so soft for such tender, new skin.
  2. Zen String: Nirvana is a lovely choice for both soakers & longies. This yarn hold shape remarkably.
  3. Mosaic Moon: I LOVE the 2-ply Targhee- it’s like knitting with a cloud. *love* Targhee is another thirsty yarn that hold shape awesomely & works great overnight. The Full Belly Farm organics are lovely yarns that drape well. I suggest it for daytime use only since it’s a bit thinner than the Targhee. -spendy/hyena(=hard to score)
  4. Wooly Wonders by Nada: I’ve only knit the Bluefaced Leicester, but every time I have- the colorways have been spectacular (all custom dyes) & the yarn more than amazing.
  5. 100PUREWOOL: Another fine choice for newborns. Inexpensive & a pure joy to knit. This yarn felts easily, knit woolies three times the normal size to felt them down to the correct size. -I’ve had a few bad experiences with colorways, so it’s best to stick with undyed (to dye yourself) or a simple, more neutral colorway.
